Olivia O’Brien just premiered her video for “hate u love u” on Teen Vogue. Olivia tells Teen Vogue “I wrote this song in my room about a boy from my high school when I was 15 years old,” Olivia told Teen Vogue about the catchy hook that would eventually fuse with gnash’s verses. “He was one of my best friends, but I always secretly liked him and then he started dating another girl.” Though someone is never under any obligation to like you back, Olivia admits that she “was so heartbroken at the time,” that she turned to song “I hate you, I love you / You want her, you need her / And I’ll never be her,” she sings, a sentiment that many people know all too well.
