JUSTIN’S UNDER THE MISTLETOE IS THE FIRST CHRISTMAS ALBUM BY A MALE ARTIST TO DEBUT AT #1 !
(Dec. 14, 2011 – New York, NY) Island Def Jam global superstar Justin Bieber’s #1 album UNDER THE MISTLETOE (released November 1st) has been certified RIAA platinum for U.S. sales in excess of 1 million units. Worldwide sales for UNDER THE MISTLETOE have surpassed the 2 million mark.
UNDER THE MISTLETOE features duets with Mariah Carey (on her # 1 holiday classic, “All I Want for Christmas is You”); Usher on “The Christmas Song” (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire); Boyz II Men on “Fa La La”; Busta Rhymes on “Drummer Boy”; and The Band Perry on “Home This Christmas.” When UNDER THE MISTLETOE debuted at #1 on Soundscan, it marked Justin’s third #1 album before his 18th birthday, after MY WORLD 2.0 (April 2010) and NEVER SAY NEVER : THE REMIXES (February 2011), soundtrack to the highest domestic-grossing concert film in history.
Interestingly, as noted in Billboard, “with [Michael] Buble’s CHRISTMAS at #1 and Justin Bieber having topped the chart earlier this month with UNDER THE MISTLETOE, this is the first year that two Christmas albums made it to the top since 1957, when Elvis Presley’s Elvis’ Christmas Album and Bing Crosby’s Merry Christmas both capped the Top 200.”
UNDER THE MISTLETOE is Justin’s fifth release since he arrived at RBMG/lsland Def Jam in November 2009 with MY WORLD, containing his worldwide debut hit, “One Time,” the follow-up “One Less Lonely Girl,” and two more chart hits, “Love Me” and “Favorite Girl.” With that, Justin became the first solo artist in history to send four songs from a debut album into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 prior to the album’s release.
Justin’s follow-up, MY WORLD 2.0 struck RIAA double-platinum with its worldwide smash, “Baby” featuring Ludacris, a triple-platinum selling single in the U.S. NEVER SAY NEVER : THE REMIXES (released Valentine’s Day 2011), with its Top 10 title-tune single featuring Jaden Smith, extended Justin’s platinum streak into 2011. Justin has sold over 14 million albums worldwide to date, and has amassed over 2.2 billion video views on YouTube, over 38 million Facebook fans and has more than 15 million Twitter followers.
Justin initiated the BELIEVE CHARITY DRIVE in order to raise money for seven selected charities by the time his new album, BELIEVE, hits stores in 2012. The charities that will benefit are: Pencils of Promise; Make A Wish Foundation; Musicians On Call; City of Hope; Project Medishare;; the Grammy Foundation; and Boys and Girls Club.
