(August 21, 2014 – New York, NY) Island Records, a division of Universal Music Group strengthens its executive level management team with the promotion of Steve Yegelwel to Senior Vice President, Island Records, it was announced today by David Massey, President, Island Records. Mr. Yegelwel, who is based in New York, will participate in all aspects of the Island Records A&R Department, and will report directly to Mr. Massey. Mr. Yegelwel will also work closely with Eric Wong, newly promoted to Executive Vice President/General Manager, Island Records, on marketing campaigns in support of Island’s up-and-coming developing artists.
“Steve has been a vital, moving force in the increasingly competitive worlds of A&R and artist development for more than a decade,” said Mr. Massey. “His track record with Fountains of Wayne and We The Kings was only surpassed by his success at Island, most recently with American Authors. Steve is that rare breed of music executive who compliments his love of A&R with even broader knowledge of artist development strategies, a combination that will serve him well in this next phase of his career at Island Records.”
“I’m very grateful to David Massey for his tremendous support and guidance. Island Records has afforded me the opportunity to bring all my abilities to the table in A&R and artist development. It’s an incredibly exciting time for Island Records and I look forward to continue working alongside David Massey, Eric Wong, and the great staff and artist roster” said Mr. Yegelwel.
Mr. Yegelwel served as Senior Vice President of A&R for UMG’s former Mercury Records label since 2012, working closely with Mr. Massey, the label’s president. As Mercury combined with Island Records, Mr. Yegelwel was responsible for signing and developing a number of significant new artists, including American Authors (whose single sales have topped the two million mark).
Mr. Yegelwel came to Mercury after five years as President, S-Curve Records, since 2007. He first joined S-Curve at its inception in 2000, serving as Executive Vice President, A&R, until the company went on hiatus in 2005. During that initial period, and upon his return (from 2007 to 2012), he was involved in the A&R process for all of the label’s artists, and was directly responsible for signing Fountains of Wayne and We The Kings. Fountains of Wayne’s RIAA gold album Welcome Interstate Managers (2003) was nominated for two Grammy Awards®, and contained the RIAA gold hit single “Stacy’s Mom.” Mr. Yegelwel also worked with Andy Grammer, whose debut album contained the hit singles, “Keep Your Head Up” (RIAA platinum) and “Fine By Me” (RIAA gold).
During S-Curve’s two year hiatus (2005-2007), Mr. Yegelwel went to Columbia Records, as Senior Vice President, A&R. There he signed critically acclaimed UK act The Go! Team; and also signed Boys Like Girls, whose RIAA gold debut album included hit singles “The Great Escape” (RIAA platinum), “Hero/Heroine” and “Thunder” (both RIAA gold).
Prior to S-Curve, Mr. Yegelwel’s early career in music began at Island Records, followed by Atlantic Records, where he was involved in the label’s initiatives in the alternative music market in the 1990s. He left Atlantic in 1999, when he became General Manager at Scratchie Records, which post he held until joining S-Curve.
Mr. Yegelwel graduated from The American University in Washington, D.C., where he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.
