New Orleans-born songwriter and vocalist extraordinaire Luke James, recipient of the 2013 Soul Train Centric Award, grabbed the brass ring in 2012, when his debut single as a solo artist, “I Want You” received a Grammy Award® nomination for Best R&B Performance. “I Want You”, written by Luke, marked his first release on the NARS (New Age Rock Star Records) label. NARS is helmed by award-winning producer Danja (credits: Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, Keri Hilson) and long-time collaborator/ mixing engineer Marcella “Ms. Lago” Araica (credits: Mado Pink, Timbaland).
The Grammy Award® nomination for “I Want You” followed up Luke’s nomination as Best New Artist at BET’s Soul Train Awards 2012. Earlier that year at the BET Honors, Luke received a standing ovation after his performance for First Lady Michelle Obama and music industry elites (click HERE to watch). Luke was also a member of BET’s “Music Matters” campaign, and joined Estelle (with whom he has recorded) on BET’s “Music Matters” tour.
Luke has performed at the Essence Music Festival, BET Black Girls Rock, BET Honors, and BET Music Matters and performed a duet medley with Fantasia to another standing ovation at the Trumpet Awards in 2013. Along with performing with Prince for two NYC shows last August, Luke has opened tours for Robin Thicke, Kelly Rowland, Brandy, and most recently was hand selected by Beyoncé to open up for her on the European and American legs of her sold-out Mrs. Carter World Tour. In regards to her selection, Beyoncé stated “Luke is pure talent. He is a gifted singer and songwriter and what he does on stage with his pure falsetto is incredible. I am excited to have him join the tour and introduce this soulful singer to an audience that will be discovering a true star.”
Luke James has also amassed an impressive list of writing credits, including tracks with Justin Bieber (“That Should Be Me”), Chris Brown (“Crawl”), and Britney Spears (“Kill The Lights”), as well as Keri Hilson, Brandy, and others. Luke worked with producers Kadis and Sean and the Messengers; and co-wrote and recorded “Easy” with Estelle as a duet track.
Luke made his feature film debut in the holiday musical Black Nativity (November 2013, FOX Searchlight Picture) alongside Academy Award winners Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson, as well as Angela Bassett, Tyrese Gibson, Mary J. Blige, and Nas. The New York Times raved that Luke James’ performance of “Silent Night” in the film was the “one thing” that made the audience fall for the movie. The film not only introduced Luke to a new audience, but it showcased Luke’s incredible vocal performance and his incredible acting ability.
Called by Billboard as a star who doesn’t “fit in your typical R&B box,” Luke James was featured as one of People Magazine’s “Sexy Men of the Week” in October 2013. Born and raised in New Orleans, Luke’s breakthrough came after high school, when he moved to Los Angeles and began singing background for R&B star Tyrese. Luke soon met production duo the Underdogs and signed with them as one-half of the vocal duo Luke & Q. When went their separate ways, Luke began honing his skills as a songwriter, eventually hooking up with producer Danja.
